Here at The Chesterfield Mayfair, there are few partnerships we cherish more than the one we’ve built with Maeve Doyle. Year on year, the demand for conscious travel is on the rise, with guests seeking to play their part in helping the communities that surround their destination. Through Maeve’s Mayfair Women in Art Tour, guests have the invaluable opportunity to make a difference.
Not only is the tour owned and operated exclusively by women, but it also shines a light on the careers of the women who have helped elevate Mayfair to the pinnacle of the art world. Whether it’s artists, gallerists, sellers, dealers, auction house personnel, writers, or critics, no contribution is overlooked. From the works hanging in Mayfair’s blue chip galleries to the arts found in the area’s beguiling streets, the tour will give guests the chance to see Mayfair through an utterly new lens.
We’re grateful to Maeve for taking the time to do the video and Q&A that you can enjoy below.
Maeve reveals all about what makes the Mayfair Women in Art Tour such a unique experience.
To begin, please tell us your story so far...
I am an internationally renowned art critic, broadcaster, and the Global Artistic Director of the Maddox Gallery group.
I studied at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada, before founding my own London gallery, Doyle Devere. I also served as a Director at Mayfair’s infamous Bankrobber gallery, best known for selling Banksy's Slave Labour and Girl with Balloon murals.
Currently, I work at Maddox Gallery, a globally celebrated contemporary art gallery based in Mayfair, where I provide the team with unique insights and a wealth of industry knowledge. My goal is to help the gallery navigate the ever-changing landscape of the art world.
In addition to my work at Maddox, I am a BBC Arts correspondent and the host of my own podcast, A Private View with Maeve Doyle, on Soho Radio’s culture channel. I have also contributed to other art broadcasts, including co-hosting Goldie: The Art That Made Me on Sky Arts.
As a thought leader in the industry, I have led panel discussions at major art fairs such as Wimbledon Art Fair, London Art Fair, The Other Art Fair, and Art on a Postcard.
How long have you been working with The Chesterfield Mayfair?
I’ve known the Chesterfield team since moving to Shepherd Market in 2017, walking past the friendly doorman at least twice a day, but I didn’t receive my first email from Suzie Norris (General Manager Adam Lake’s Executive Assistant) until May 2023.
What you would you say to your younger self?
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes because if you aren’t making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough – you’ll learn valuable lessons in the process.
What words of wisdom would you give to any woman who is looking to get into the industry?
Show up, be informed, stay positive, make time for people, constantly work on improving your skills, and have fun!
